In Australia, a Songman is a revered tribal member who is the custodian of the songs and stories of the Dreamtime, which are not written but are passed down orally from generation to generation. Aboriginal statesman David Gulpilil invited Nomad/Plack to Arnhem Land to live, write and record music together under the stars. With tribal elder approval, which permitted the public performance of these songs, Plack was able to translate tribal chants into English and create new songs that retained the spirit and intention of the original language while allowing us to understand the message.
Songman was recorded on Aboriginal land within the community of Ramingining in Arnhem Land, Australia and features the hypnotic didgeridoo and vocals of Australian composer/producer Nomad/Plack, along with tribal chants by Aboriginal Songmen, the multi-talented dancer/actor, David Gulpilil (Walkabout, Crocodile Dundee, Storm Boy, The Last Wave), Bobby Bunnungurr and Jimmy Jidamin. The result is a fresh and evocative blend of ancient voice and rhythms that, along with the catchiest grooves, succinctly captures the essence of contemporary, cultural Australia.
Nomad's "Songman" will instantly transport you to a land you always knew existed...
