The follow-up to the groundbreaking self titled “Nomad” release, “Songman” was recorded on tribal land within the Ramingining Community of Amhem Land. Australia and features the hypnotic didgeridoo and vocals of composer/producer Nomad. Songs sung in English remind me of the Jai Uttal songs on “Monkey”, which stand alongside the best expressions of Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins or Steve Winwood! Nomad is accompanied by Aboriginal songmen, David Gulpoill (of “Walkabout” fame), Bobby Bunnungur and Jimmy Jidamin. Rhythms blaze trail into the earth, while sultry grooves, entrancing tribal beats and snake-charming didgare all laced with the exotic chants of the Aboriginal Dreamtime. Emotions run deep, audio quality is superb, and the churning sounds probe one’s own experience and bearing to challenge the listeners to meet the artist full on. Based in the rich oral tradition of Australian Aboriginal songs, poetry and legends, Nomad’s hybrid musical style looks to the past while burning a deep path into the future. This is not a casual ride - but an intense journey where spirit and culture collide.
